Zebronics Air Gear

In the quest to make music players more and more portable people are looking towards wireless Bluetooth headsets and devices. However, Zebronics takes a different approach and has integrated the music player right into the headset. Let's see how far this different approach to portability makes listening to music more convenient for consumers.

Design and features

The Air Gear is remarkably light at just a couple of grams. On the right side are the play/pause and power buttons for easy access, and you're never left fumbling trying to find them. Just above these are the forward and back buttons, which also serve as volume controls when held down.

Clicking the buttons results in forward/back and the system seems to work well. It's slightly annoying that there was no way to skip further ahead into a song but the controls are decent. A circular blue LED blinks when the headset is in operation or charging. The headband is flexible laterally but its length is fixed and this might feel odd for some users if it does not fit them right.

The Air Gear can only play MP3's and WMA's, and there s not so much as an equalizer in sight. One feature that would've really been a saving grace is a radio, but it lacks that as well.

Battery life

Surprisingly this lasted slightly longer than the stated 8 hours, considering much of this was on the highest volume, which is insanely loud, this is quite impressive.

Performance

The bass comes across quite nicely and doesn't feel too lacking. The highs on the other hand aren't distinct and seem diminished. Just the voices and mids are reproduced very well. Overall I'd say for the price range the audio quality is good. The headphones are also surprisingly loud and could drown out even noisy background noise.

They are even loud enough to be used as speakers in environments that aren't too noisy, though they can't take that level of volume and the sound degrades. There's also quite a bit of vibration when they're being played out loud.

Conclusion

At Rs. 2,000 for 2GB and Rs. 1,750 for the 1GB version this doesn't seem too bad. The sound quality is good for the price though not anything phenomenal. With that USB 1.1 port, transferring music takes longer than it should, but with a capacity of only 1 and 2 GB available, the overall time taken would still be inconsequential.

The lack of an equalizer might be disappointing for some people as well as the limited formats. That said; the battery life and the near speaker-like volume that it can produce are impressive and could easily deliver music to a group of people nearby. If you like how this flashy portable music player looks and fancy listening to your music without wires, this is a decent buy.
