Product Review
The reigning king of windows based PDA's took a big downturn when PDA devices went out of favour. HP made a comeback with Phone PDA's but has never really ignited the market. With the 6965 they finally have a very exciting product after a very long time.
The design of this machine is still nothing to write home about. It's fairly big, wide and due to the keyboard in the front has a squarish screen. It feels heavy but is very well built. The plastic flip top is of a good material and locks in tight. It also helps to keep smudges off the screen and prevents the screen from being scratched. In case you feel it takes away for the form factor of the device, this can easily be dismantled.
The keyboard is well executed, thumb typing is easy and the keys are spaced and shaped well. There is a rocker switch on the upper left hand side and a very solid stub stylus complete the outer features.
This is a typical windows mobile 5.0 with some added HP extras. The camera is a middling 1.3 mega-pixel but has a sluggish start time and image capture also was very slow. Wifi was easy to set up, range was good and it's easy to set up profiles. This unit has Windows Media Player 10 mobile version, thus songs and video are handled competently. A add on mini SD slot ensures that you can add on flash memory when required.
This is one of the first ever phones with five radio inside. Voice, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Data EDGE GPRS and of course the killer application GPS.
The GPS is very easy to use but currently the maps are not as detailed as we would like them to be. Setting up the GPS was very easy, getting a lock onto satellites was simple and the voice instructions were loud and clear. The GPS has added features like setting up favourites, alternate destination and even avoiding certain road and routes.
With or without the GPS, battery life takes a big hit. This is one of those phones that needs to be charged every night and sometimes even in the evening.
Overall, this has to be the most full featured phones in India today. It has the stamp of HP reliability and may well set the benchmark in terms of what it can do.
